Why Your Training Age Matters More Than Your Biological Age

Athletes fixate on the wrong number. They worry about turning 40, or 50, or 60, and what that means for their potential. But the number that actually determines your trajectory has nothing to do with your birthday. It is your training age: how many years you have been training consistently and with purpose.

A 45-year-old with a decade of structured, aerobically focused training has a fundamentally different physiology to a 25-year-old in their first year of endurance sport. The older athlete almost certainly has a deeper aerobic base, a more developed metabolic engine, and a body that absorbs and responds to training load in ways the younger athlete cannot yet match. Biological age tells you how many years have passed. Training age tells you how much of that time your body has actually spent adapting.

What Training Age Builds

The adaptations that drive endurance performance are not quick wins. Mitochondrial density increases gradually. Capillary networks expand slowly. The enzymatic machinery that governs how efficiently your body converts fuel into mechanical work develops through years of consistent sub-threshold stimulus. Monocarboxylate transporters, the proteins that shuttle lactate between muscle fibres so it can be oxidised as fuel, increase their density and efficiency with training history.

None of this is determined by your date of birth. It is determined by how many years your body has been receiving a structured, progressive aerobic stimulus. An athlete with five years of consistent, well-structured training has built infrastructure that an athlete with six months of hard work simply does not possess, regardless of who is chronologically older. Part of that infrastructure is structural: the bones, tendons, and connective tissue that adapt on a timeline measured in years, not weeks.

This is why two athletes at the same age, doing the same sessions, can produce completely different results. Their training ages are different. The athlete with more years of quality work has a deeper foundation to build on, and that foundation changes what their body can do with the same training input.

Why Experience Cannot Be Shortcuts

The Norwegian triathlon programme produced an Olympic champion from an athlete who was not an exceptional junior talent. The athletes who later won world championships were, by their own coaches' admission, finishing 50th and 60th in junior races. What separated them was not genetics. It was a decade of patient, consistent development under a system that prioritised long-term aerobic growth over short-term results.

The principle is the same for every athlete at every level. The athletes who commit to a process and refine it over years build deeper fitness than the ones who restart every season. Each year of consistent training does not just maintain what you have. It compounds. The aerobic base you build in year three sits on top of the foundation laid in years one and two. By year five, you have an engine that year-one-you could not have imagined.

There is no supplement, no training block, and no technology that can compress this timeline. Training age accumulates one year at a time, and nothing substitutes for the years themselves.

What the Curve Reveals About Your History

Your power-duration curve is a record of your training age, whether you realise it or not. An athlete with years of aerobic development tends to show a curve that is proportionally strong across all durations. The long end of the curve, reflecting their sub-threshold capacity and metabolic efficiency, sits high relative to their short-duration peak. That shape takes years to build.

An athlete early in their training history often shows the opposite: decent short-duration power relative to their long-duration output. The gap between the two reveals how much aerobic infrastructure remains to be developed. As training age increases and the aerobic base deepens, the long end of the curve rises. The shape of the whole curve shifts to reflect the accumulation of years of quality work.

This is also why chasing a single metric misses the point. Your curve tracks the development of an entire metabolic system. That development is a function of training years, not calendar years.

Why This Is Good News

If performance were primarily determined by biological age, there would be an expiry date on improvement. There is not. Athletes in their 40s and 50s who have been training consistently for a decade are often setting personal bests because their training age is still growing. Their aerobic base is still deepening. Their metabolic efficiency is still improving.

It also means that starting late is not the disadvantage athletes assume. A 40-year-old who begins structured training today has the same physiological capacity to build mitochondrial density, capillary networks, and transporter efficiency as they would have at 25. The rate of biological ageing is real, but it is far slower than the rate of aerobic development in an athlete who has never trained properly. Your training age at zero is the most powerful place to start, because every year from here adds to a foundation that did not exist before.

Stop counting birthdays. Start counting the years you have spent building your aerobic engine with purpose and consistency. That is the number that determines what you are capable of next.
